Australia’s interior design community came together to celebrate the tenth year of its most respected awards program on Friday 31 May, at Melbourne’s historic Plaza Ballroom. Among the standout projects recognized this year at the tenth annual Australian Interior Design Awards are a sustainable kindergarten in Western Australia, a sumptuous loft in Tribeca and a vibrant Melbourne coffee haunt.

Members of the alumni of former jurors from the past ten years were present at the 2013 awards, which were presented by broadcaster Fenella Kernebone, host of ABC Radio’s By Design. The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, sent a message of congratulations to all entrants in the program for their contribution to the culture of Australian design, saying:

“This evening’s event represents a milestone, and reflects on the depth, professionalism, ingenuity and talent that abound in the Australian interior design industry today. Once again, this year’s entries have captured our attention and imagination through their thought provoking designs while retaining their practicality and utility. Design is an integral part of our nation’s creative sector, and we are fortunate that our stories are being told through the lens of interior designers, providing an opportunity to capture the sights, sounds and feelings that our environments evoke. As such, it is with great pleasure that I extend my congratulations to all those who have submitted entries for this event and wish all those in attendance an enlightening and rewarding evening which celebrates the best that the Australian interior design industry has to offer.”

The Australian Interior Design Awards are co-presented by the Design Institute of Australia , DesignEX , and Artichoke magazine. To mark the tenth anniversary of the awards, a short video (above) takes us inside the judging process with the 2013 jury: Paul Brace of Jackson Teece, Miriam Fanning of Mim Design, Will Fung of Co-Ap, Matt Gibson of Matt Gibson Architecture + Design, Kirsten Stanisich of SJB, Heidi Stowers of Gray Puksand, Christina Waterson of How We Create, and Steve Woodland of Cox Howlett & Bailey Woodland, with sustainability advisor, John Gertsakis of Infoactiv Group, and Joanne Cys FDIA from the University of South Australia as jury convenor.
