Jasmax architectural graduate Patrick Loo has taken out the top honour in a tightly fought Emerging Design Professional category at the 2013 Interior Awards, announced on 20 June.

The Emerging Design Professional Award (which replaces last year’s Emerging Design Practice category) recognises talented, up-and-coming young architects and designers aged 30 years or under. The candidates’ work to date within the commercial design sector, significant professional achievements, and design motivations and philosophies were considered by the awards judges during the two-phase judging process.

In the end it was “an eye both for the grander concept and the fine-grained detail” that made Loo a stand-out amongst the line-up of strong contenders this year.

“Resolute in his desire to produce works of great design, Patrick has also shown an understanding of the benefits of the collaborative approach. Already, his self-directed work – long, long hours of ‘fun’ with his friends from Oh.No.Sumo – has gone on to inform aspects of his work at Jasmax. Patrick is a very focused designer, with wide ranging interests, and a very strong vision for what he wants to be doing – and designing – in the future.

“His aspirations to scale up the scope of his learning, his willingness to cooperate and seek out advice from appropriate mentors, and his interest in taking a wider view of this profession, to add commentary, and contribute in another way, sets him apart as one to watch. This young man is dedicated to design and architecture. His clarity of thought, intellectual rigour and inherent creativity make him an asset to the design community.”
