Medium density housing by Batay-Csorba Architects. As part of this semester’s Fast Forward lecture series on Doing Medium Density Well, Batay-Csorba will speak about their experience designing in Toronto.

The School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland is bringing back their twice-yearly lecture series, Fast Forward, beginning 18 July. This spring's events include talks from experts and change-makers in the field talking about the theme: Doing Medium Density Well.

Topics in this semester’s series range from prefabs to co-ops and KiwiBuild to Unitec. There will be nine weekly public events featuring insights from local and international practitioners exploring the issues facing the industry today. Each event is eligible for New Zealand Registered Architects Board and Architectural Designers New Zealand CPD points.

18 July – Pamela Bell of PrefabNZ discusses how prefabricated housing can play a role in solving the current housing crisis.

25 July – Co-operative housing: Auckland experiences. Architects Prue Fea, Thom Gill and Marianne Riley will give presentations on their current projects and the benefits and concerns around co-operative housing models.

1 August – What should happen on the Unitec site? Professor of architecture and Hobsonville Point researcher Erroll Harrhoff will moderate a panel discussion about the fate of the Auckland Unitec site that the government has recently acquired. 

8 August – Toronto architects Jodi and Andrew Batay-Csorba discuss how medium-density housing is being approached in their city.

15 August – Hendrik Tieden: Towards better integration of transport, housing and community space in Hong Kong. This professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong specialising in urban design discusses how sectors of infrastructure in his city can be combined to create better communities.

29 August – The Honourable Phil Twyford: Housing, urban development and transport. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development and Minister of Transport discusses current issues and initiatives regarding the housing crisis and development of public transportation.

5 September – Orchid Atimalala. University of Auckland School of Architecture and Planning graduate reflects on her near 30-year career as both a woman and person of Pacific descent in the planning industry.

19 September – Architects discuss design for medium density. Part of this year’s Festival of Architecture, a panel of architects with winning multi-unit housing projects will discuss their work.

26 September – Sue Evans of Housing New Zealand presents case studies of medium density developments with tangible quaility and liveability gains.
