On 12 November at the Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt, the winners of 2019’s ECC New Zealand Student Craft/Design Awards were announced with the kind of enthusiasm that was warranted by the impressive calibre of submissions.

Oliver Cain’s collection of banana-strewn bowls took home the coveted titles of Supreme Award winner and Tuatara Ceramic Award winner. “These pieces are carefully considered and use a light-hearted approach to talk to a specific message of sexuality – the use of bananas is brilliant and you instantly get the message he is trying to convey,” says Awards’ organiser Heather Crichton.

The ECC Furniture and Product Design Award was given to Sian Hosking Berge for designing a kitset balance bike for children aged two to five; Sarah Harvey won the Village Goldsmith Jewellery Award and ECC People’s Choice Award for her bridge-inspired jade necklace; for his wooden lamp, Samuel Brian nabbed the ECC Lighting Award; Steven Almond won the L’affare Innovation in Sustainability Award for his recycle-minded sofa system; and Susan Richardson took home The Friends of The Dowse Fashion and Textile Award for her non-traditional embroidery piece.
