It is with great sadness that we report the passing of one of New Zealand's most extraordinary architects, Peter Beaven.

Peter Beaven, 86, died peacefully in Blenheim on 4 June, 2012 after being diagnosed with cancer in late 2011. He is survived by his wife, Lesley Beaven, his three children and seven grandchildren.

Beaven is one of the best-known figures in New Zealand’s architectural history. His architectural resume spans nearly half a century and includes many iconic and award-winning projects and buildings, particularly in the Canterbury region. In 2003, Beaven was awarded the highest honour in architecture, the New Zealand Institute of Architecture’s Gold Medal.

An extensive profile on Peter Beaven featured in Houses New Zealand (Spring; 2009). Read the full article here.

Beaven’s last review for Architecture New Zealand, ‘The new romantics’ can be read in full here.
