Julie Stout is a seasoned design professional, an urban design advocate and a Distinguished Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. She joins the jury for the Interior Awards in 2020 and, here, we get to know her better.

What will you be looking forward to while judging the Interior Awards in 2020?

Julie Stout (JS): Seeing work that offers something fresh and new and about the place they are from.

If you could dispense one piece of advice to entrants, what would it be?

JS: Be yourself and be of your place.

What is your favourite drink or dish at the moment?

JS: I recently made Hainanese chicken and rice. Poach half a chicken in broth, cook rice in broth and then load in all the flavours of soy, sesame oil, chilli, lime and ginger in dipping sauces. Pretty simple and yum.

What is one book that has engrossed you recently?

JS: Twenty years after it came out, I’m reading Geoff Park’s Theatre Country: Essays on Landscape and Whenua. It’s still very powerful and relevant today.

You can read a longer interview here where Julie expands on her role as an urban advocate.

Entries for the 2020 Interior Awards open on 4 February. Click here to meet the rest of the 2020 Interior Awards jury.
