A new theatre on Auckland’s waterfront is a step closer to reality after AUT University pledges to invest $5m in the Auckland Theatre Company project.

Construction of the $35m theatre is set to begin at the end of 2013, with an opening date estimated to be mid-2015.

“Having a new 600-seat theatre within the Wynyard Quarter commercial and residential precinct will be great for the area and symbolises the diverse mixed-use live, work and play environment we are looking to grow in this part of the city,” says Waterfront Auckland’s chief executive John Dalzell.

“It promises to be a vibrant attraction and together with the innovation precinct will help position the precinct as a creative hub for the inner city waterfront.”
