Best Bar Design
Pretty Please by Travis Walton

Jury comment

Prettiness becomes almost decadent in the lavish fantasy setting of Pretty Please. Catering for the savvy night crowds of Melbourne’s sophisticated bar scene, Pretty Please offers a sumptuous spatial setting for even the most jaded palate. The design themes are diverse, opulent and lush, with overscaled photo-murals of foliage and blooms so vivid one can almost smell them. Dexterous planning and lighting caters for both large and intimate groups, with luxurious upholstery of velvets and silks in banquettes and alcoves providing sensory “nests” among the psycho-botanical setting. The floating white bar is a clean, ethereal foil to this excess, with its clever sweep of uplit bottles curving into a double-height void. Though Pretty Please might play on childhood fairytale perceptions in its imagery and pervasive “pinkness,” there is nothing innocent or naive about this very adult playground.

Design statement

The concept behind Pretty Please was to create a world of fantasy and sinful opulence, and a unique, private social experience. Inspiration was drawn from new york and Las Vegas-style super clubs tailored to nights of sensory indulgence. Having previously been a nightclub, much of the required infrastructure was already in place. This allowed us to focus on the decorative elements of the venue. Alterations to the spatial planning played a significant role in the concept’s success by improving capacity, intimacy and circulation. Patrons are guided through a variety of spatial experiences, each drawing on colour, materiality, graphics and lighting to enhance the sensory experience.
