Höst, a restaurant in Denmark designed by Norm Architects, has been named the best-looking restaurant in the world. And London’s Atrium Champagne Bar, which was designed by Foster and Partners, is the best bar, according to the 2013 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.

The two nightspots were announced the big winners, along with 25 category winners, at the Farmiloe Building in London on 12 September. Now in its fifth year, the annual awards celebrate the best food and beverage spaces around the globe. There were 670 entries from 61 countries this year, and the finalists included a handful of Auckland hotspots. Cheshire Architect’s Milse in Auckland’s Britomart was a finalist in the Australia & Pacific restaurant category. Libertine, designed by Pack & Company’s creative director Sam Ansley, was short-listed in the Australia & Pacific bar category. Other New Zealand finalists included Little Nuffield by Material Creative, BinBin Deluxe by Lovelace & Co. and The Matakana-Village Pub by Peter Were Architecture & Interiors.

None of the New Zealand finalists were winners this year. The award for the best restaurant in the Australia & Pacific category went to The Century, a Chinese restaurant in Sydney, designed by Paring Onions. Alfred & Constance, designed by Alexander Loterzstain, won best bar in Australia & Pacific. Third Wave Cafe, named Best Eatery by Urbis in our annual Best Of issue, was deemed best Canteen.

The winners were chosen by a panel of judges including Moooi founder Casper Vissers, head of visual design at Harvey Nichols, Janet Wardley and restaurant critic for The Times, Giles Coren.
