Aorangi House, on Wellington’s Molesworth Street, co-won a top award at the World Green Building Council‘s (WorldGBC) Asia Pacific Leadership in Green Building Awards last week. The WorldGBC praised the project as a “stellar example” of green building and a “well-deserved winner”.

Engineering consultancy firm Beca worked on the environmentally-friendly design for Aorangi House and moved in as an anchor tenant shortly after its opening. The building, originally a 1970s office block, had become degraded and outdated over time. Thus, Beca and Studio Pacific Architecture created an integrated design and completed a major refubishment on the original site, including a range of energy-saving features.

In 2016, Aorangi House attained a 5-star NABERSNZ rating: an outstanding achievement for a recycled building. The win at the WorldGBC awards further proves that sustainable design is a viable option for many projects in New Zealand, not just new builds.
