New Zealand Architecture Award Public Architecture winner: Birkenhead Library & Civic Centre, Auckland.

The New Zealand Institute of Architecture APL Architects Design Series 2011 will travel to Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Invercargill. The three award-winning projects that will be presented are:

New Zealand Architecture Award (Small Project), iPAD at Porikapa Beach - Taranaki
This contemporary take on that perennial source of architectural fascination – the pre-fabricated dwelling – can serve as a small holiday home or studio or be configured in a series of pavilions. Speaker: André Hodgskin - Architex New Zealand Ltd. “This is a fine specimen of that elusive species, the successful modular house. No space is wasted in this inventive building.”

New Zealand Architecture Award (Public Architecture), Birkenhead Library & Civic Centre
A lyrical building sited on a small public reserve, this new generation library also houses council services, a Plunket Office and a Citizens Advice Bureau. Speaker: Brendan Rawson - Archoffice. “Textured surfaces and dappled light help to realise the Architect’s idea that the experience of reading a book in the library might be akin to reading a book in a tree.”

New Zealand Architecture Award (Sustainable Design), Orokonui Ecosanctuary Visitor Centre
A visitor and interpretive centre located in a ‘cloud forest’ outside Dunedin, making use of containers as an economical construction technique. Speaker: Tim Heath - Architectural Ecology. “The function of the facility is celebrated by the architecture, which provides a commanding space overlooking the protected regenerating flora and oriented towards significant landforms.”
