Auckland Architecture Week

The Auckland Architecture Week is back for 2015 and is taking place citywide from the 21 - 27 September. It is a celebration of what Auckland is doing right, its ambitions for the future, as well as an opportunity to hear architects explain what they do and from where they draw their inspiration.

Some highlights of the 2015 festival include: 

From Heritage to Contemporary – a Snapshot of our Architectural Heritage.
Thursday 24 September - Mt Eden Bowling Club, 7pm

This year Architecture Week has achieved synchronicity with the Albert-Eden Bungalow Festival 2015. This event, which officially opens the bungalow festival, features a tribute slideshow evening curated by Nicole Stock, editor of Bungalow: From Heritage to Contemporary.

New Zealand Green Building Council Walking Tour
Saturday 26 September, meet at Takutai Square, 44 Galway Street, Britomart, 1oam. Tour duration approx two hours. Finishes at Wynyard Quarter

Downtown Auckland has more than 30 Green Star rated buildings. To celebrate Auckland Architecture Week and World Green Building Week, the New Zealand Institute of Architects and the New Zealand Green Building Council are running a joint walking tour of notable CBD buildings.

Auckland Architecture Week Mini Film Festival
Sunday 27 September, Auckland Art Gallery auditorium, 3 - 7.30pm

This year, Architecture New Zealand and Resene are proud to present a mini-film festival as the closing act of Auckland Architecture Week 2015. The two films featured are A Place to Call Home (director Briar March; producer Richard Riddiford) which focuses on the fate of state housing in New Zealand in the face of gentrification and privatisation, and the Ever the Land documentary. 

Ever the Land (director Sarah Grohnert; producer Alexander Behse) recently premiered to great acclaim at the New Zealand International Film Festival. It is an observational documentary on the planning and construction of New Zealand’s first ‘living building’, Te Wharehou o Tūhoe. The film presents both the massive challenge of building and the unfolding of a potent symbol of Ngāi Tūhoe philosophy, all framed against ongoing negotiations with the Government.

Both films will be followed by a short Q&A with the director or film editor.

St James Theatre Heritage Tour
Thursday 24 September, St James Theatre, access via Lorne Street, 12.15 pm

 The St James Theatre Auckland has a storied past, built in 1928 and designed by prolific theatre architect Henry Eli White. The stage has hosted such lumanaires as Laurence Olivier, Vivian Leigh, Miles Davis, James Brown, Kanye West and the White Stripes. This behind the scenes tour and talk by heritage expert George Farrant (Auckland Council Principal Heritage Advisor) and Steve Bielby (Auckland Notable Properties Trust) will look at the how and the who of this multi-million dollar heritage refurbishment.

Resene Total Colour Awards 2015
Wednesday 23 September, The Great Room, Auckland Town Hall, 6pm for 7.15pm presentation

 The Resene Total Colour Awards were launched to encourage and celebrate excellent and creative use of colour; to showcase striking colour palettes and combinations and provide fresh inspiration.  See the winners of the Resene Total Colour Awards 2015 announced at this colourful event. Grab a drink, mix and mingle. If you are attending Auckland Conversations the awards will not commence until the conclusion of this event.
