Adobe modern
Partner content: Architectural photographer Casey Dunn has an affinity for the high desert houses of west Texas. In 2016, he published a coffee-table book on the subject, Marfa Modern. At the same time, he was working with architects Side Angle Side to design his own home in the rapidly developing neighbourhood of East Austin and discovered the same simple, efficient design principles could apply to an urban home.
Dunn and his wife Sarah worked with architects Arthur Furman and Annie-Laurie Grabiel of Side Angle Side to create a simple, gabled-roof house with little articulation or embellishment, inspired by the monolithic adobe buildings of the west Texas high country.
While the adobe house was created essentially from one material, it nevertheless provides warmth and a variety of spaces inside its barn-like shape. Within the envelope, the architects punched in recessed window frames that create a shadow line and give the impression that the walls are much thicker than they are. This also protects the timber frames from the rain.
A cast-in-place concrete wall runs parallel to the house, before making a right-hand turn and bisecting the building. Inside, the same beautifully variegated concrete wall divides the vestibule from the kitchen and living space. The length of the large kitchen looks out at the rest of the property, so it made sense to put the kitchen sink by the window wall and the cooktop on the concrete wall to create an L-shaped area, into which the island neatly fits.
In the kitchen, the goal was to create a minimal, clean space with few distractions. The white oak cabinetry has table legs and open shelving, shallow grips have been bevelled out behind each drawer and the dark soapstone countertops keep the scheme monochromatic.
The gas cooktop is separated from the oven, keeping the former on show, and consolidating the oven and other more solid elements into the inner side of the island. A large French-door refrigerator and pantry sit against the solid wall between the windows and glass sliding door, allowing the rest of the cabinetry to stay low so the concrete wall and window could remain as focal points.
