A former student of Pip Cheshire, Dajiang Tai has worked with Cheshire Architects for the past 15 years and has been responsible for designing some of Auckland’s most beautiful projects, including The Hotel Britomart, Saan, Ghost Street and Ortolana.

On sharing news of Tai’s appointment to the role of director, practice founder Pip Cheshire says from the day he began working with the studio, Tai set about making “not great streets, buildings, rooms, furniture, or lamps but extraordinarily reimagined experiences of our city.”

“He did so from the midnight hand-painting of poetry in calligraphic graffiti on the walls of basement noodle dens, to the construction of the 10-storey, half-city-block Hotel Britomart.”

Tai is the architect of Aotearoa’s first five-star Greenstar hotel (The Hotel Britomart) and the recipient of the Interior Awards’ Emerging Design Professional of the year, the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Sir Miles Warren Award for commercial architecture and a dozen gold pins at the Designer’s Institute of New Zealand’s Best Awards.

“Dajiang has helped us build not only special projects but a special studio,” says fellow director Nat Cheshire, “so this appointment is made with much pride and happiness and we’re looking forward to our shared future.”
