Five of the world’s leading architecture firms presented their entries tonight for a design competition to build a landmark high-rise tower at 65 Federal Street in central Auckland, close to the Sky Tower.
The designs for the residential/hotel tower were presented as part of ‘What’s next Auckland?’, a lively forum to discuss the future of Auckland and its skyline.
Designs range from locals Warren and Mahoney’s korowai inspired tower, with a cascading facade that represents the wider community of Auckland, to London-based Zaha Hadid’s design with a sky garden at its centre, alluding to Auckland’s streetscape and landscape. Global firm Woods Bagot, Cox Architecture of Australia, and Melbourne-based Elenberg Fraser presented their multi-faceted designs, which each feature dynamic facades that reference the city’s personality and natural landforms.
The winner will be announced in October by ICD Property, a Melbourne-based property development company, which will bring the winning design to life at 65 Federal St. This is ICD Property’s first project outside of Australia. No matter which of the impressive designs is chosen, the hope is the building will bring an international standard of high-rise living to Auckland as well as contributing to the city’s future growth and development.
