Dulux Autumn Trends 2024
Partner Content: This autumn, Dulux colour forecasters predict a gravitation towards shades that evoke warmth and comfort within the home. One of three palettes in the 2024 Colour Forecast, Journey takes influence from the team’s travels and folk traditions.
“Maximalist and pattern-heavy, Journey combines bold mid-tone colours with cooler shades,” Dulux Colour Specialist, Davina Harper explains. “The palette evokes a sense of security and comfort in the home — making it ideal for autumn — and is influenced further through the layering of textures and objects with rich ancestral heritage.”
The palette highlights green colours inspired by nature. Dulux Tarras, Dulux Te Horo with muted blues, Dulux Te Ānau, Dulux Murrays Bay are designed to make a space feel larger and tranquil. Elsewhere muted neutral pinks, Dulux Trentham, Dulux Evening Blush, can create a cohesive look.
Dulux Colour Forecaster and Stylist Bree Leech offers inspiration after recently using the palette in a new family home. Adding depth and meaning through colour, furnishing and objects, Leech transformed a master bedroom, hallway, living room and secondary living space.
For the master bedroom, Leech used Dulux Murrays Bay. Harper says, “Murrays Bay is a new colour we’ve introduced into the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range. It’s a beautiful greyed off mid-toned blue that works well as both an all-over wall colour or as an accent. Here it adds a level of complexity into this bedroom that draws the occupant in.”
Referencing bolder shades within the palette, Dulux Carmen, a rich berry shade, is used within the floor length curtains and decorative artwork to add contrast and interest, without overpowering the room.
Journey combines elements of bohemian charm, eclectic allure and the art of craft which has influenced furniture and decorative objects around the bedroom. “Mismatched pillows and floral bed throws invite pattern and bursts of earthy colour into the space, highlighting shades such as Dulux Tarras and Dulux Crow Valley.”
“A beautiful pebbly patterned bench in the bay window is in contrasting shades of bruised reds and cooler blues to add interest. Matching shades are added harmoniously in small quantities in quirky artwork and vessels within the room, such as marble and ceramics, adding materiality,” says Leech.
Once an all-white space, the living room has been painted in a jewelled purple shade, Dulux Martinborough, resulting in a space fit for nesting in the autumn months. Whilst the deep and decadent colour completely envelopes the room, a softened beige and deep red, Dulux Glinks Gully and Dulux Carmen, is added to the trims, doors, architraves and soft furnishings to balance the space.
“We wanted to bring more texture and materiality into the living room and the new sofa, occasional chair and woven baskets all add another dimension to the space. Artwork, woven lighting and a tribal rug complete the bohemian charm of the space, tying the colour palette together,” says Leech.
The secondary living space features blue green on the walls. “Dulux Te Ānau is very uplifting and works as a backdrop for other warmer colours, it can bring some life to an otherwise uninspiring room.” Floral ceramic vases and artwork feature pink, grassy greens, and a layered rug in a golden beige aim to create a positive space for resting during autumn.
The hallway is washed in Dulux Epsom to create a gentle mood throughout the home. A woven stool, a greyed-off green chair and large artwork on the wall introduce a mixture of bolder shades from the palette including Dulux Crow Valley, Dulux Te Horo, and Dulux Carmen. These same shades — in addition to shades that Leech used in every room — feature within the intricate mosaic floor tiles.
Harper explains that every colour is designed to work cohesively. “Just select which colour you want to be the hero and bring in other hues in different proportions to create a colour palette to match the desired mood.”
“The Journey palette celebrates many layers; pattern, wicker and vintage treasures. Try mixing pieces that you have collected, experienced or remind you of your travels with these colours to transform your space.”
