It is with great sadness that the team at Architecture NZ and ArchitectureNow shares the news that our friend and colleague Pip Cheshire died yesterday, 11 February, following a brief illness.

Pip has been a hugely valued member of our editorial team for the last seven years, with his thoughtful and beautifully written columns and accompanying watercolour imagery. He has also been a great supporter of the magazine for many years, prior to becoming a columnist.

Pip’s passing is an unimaginably sad loss for the industry and the country, not only in light of his exceptional contributions to both the profession and academia but also to the built and cultural landscapes. His strategic thinking and ongoing advocacy coupled with great creativity, honesty, generosity and wisdom have left a profound mark on both the people and places he has touched.

Over the last four decades, Pip has been a President of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (2014–2016), a recipient of the Institute’s Gold Medal (2013), a founding director of Bossley Cheshire (1984), a founding director and managing director of Jasmax (1989–2003) and the founder of Cheshire Architects (2004). In 2024, Pip was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to architecture and commitment to the betterment of New Zealand’s built environment.

Architecture NZ extends our deepest condolences to Pip’s whānau, friends and colleagues at Cheshire Architects and will pay a full tribute to Pip in our March/April issue of the magazine. Arohanui Pip.
