Jasmax opens Melbourne studio
Jasmax has joined with Australian practice Canvas Projects to open a Melbourne studio, in response to its steady growth since opening its first Australian studio in Sydney in 2022. Jasmax says it aims to use its strategic foothold in Australia to meet demand in the education, health, transport and cultural sectors, strengthened by Canvas Projects’ local expertise.
Jasmax now has over 250 staff in six locations across New Zealand and Australia, delivering services in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design and masterplanning. With over 60 years of practice, the studio has built a significant portfolio of education facilities, hospitals and healthcare facilities, cultural institutions and transport and urban planning projects.
Canvas Projects has delivered architectural projects across the Australian state of Victoria, working primarily with state and local government clients on community infrastructure. Projects include K-12 schools and sports and aquatic centres, alongside multi-purpose community hubs that integrate library, recreation, health and childcare facilities.

The Canvas Projects team now sits within Jasmax, with directors Nick Gamble, Jeff Gabriel and Michelle Harris becoming Jasmax principals and shareholders. Harris has been appointed Jasmax Melbourne Studio Lead.
In a statement about the move, Jasmax CEO Matthew Glubb said, “Jasmax and Canvas Projects share a common ethos, a highly collaborative approach, and a focus on providing real value to the clients and communities we serve. Canvas Projects has an exceptional design portfolio, and we look forward to joining our experience and expertise with their local knowledge to benefit new and existing clients in Australia.”
Harris says the Canvas Projects team is excited to join Jasmax: “Jasmax is an industry leader with considerable resources and expertise, particularly in sustainable and Indigenous design. Joining forces will enable us to deliver bigger, more complex projects and move into new sectors.”
The move forwards Jasmax’s goals to practice sustainable and Indigenous design through in-house Carbon Consultancy dedicated to achieving net zero carbon emissions and a dedicated Indigenous design collective.
