Mel Bright Lecture 2022 – Friday 18 November, Christchurch Town Hall
Australian architect Mel Bright founded Melbourne-based practice Studio Bright in 2006. The practice operates on the philosophy that every project is an opportunity to contribute positively to the local environment, be it through connecting local people and communities or by improving the spaces that are to be occupied. Challenges are approached with optimism and consideration as to how design can meet fundamental human needs.
Mel will talk about Studio Bright’s recent projects, including Autumn House, a restoration and extension to a Victorian terrace in Melbourne’s inner north that recently won Australian House of the Year. The jury admired the richness evident in every room, the successful integration of house and garden, and the respect shown for layers of history.
While Studio Bright might be best known for their houses, they have also been working on numerous city-making projects across multi-residential, educational and public building typologies. Their project at Quay Quarter Lanes in Sydney won the 2022 NSW Architecture Award for Urban Design, the Lord Mayor’s Prize and the Aaron Bolot Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing (Named Award).
Prior to starting Studio Bright, Mel worked in numerous design practices locally and internationally – across London, Europe, Southeast Asia and China.
