Today we go out and about, around the central city and Brera, to take a break from Rho. We step into Europe’s first fully 3D-printed house, the Living Nature Pavilion and Hay’s stand. The city is bustling – this year's numbers at Salone del Mobile are record-breaking – and the temperature is a balmy 26 degrees Celsius.

Day four - 20 April

3D-printed house

3D house 05

, by CLS Architetti in conjunction with ArupItalcementi and CyBe, is a technological masterpiece located just past Duomo in Milan. This 100m2, four-room, concrete house was printed over three weeks and contains a living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, as well as a roof terrace.

Fittings and furnishings were selected to contrast the concrete, with a slick brass benchtop and highly polished marble table tops and bathroom fittings, along with crisply finished window and door joinery.

The result is surprisingly sophisticated and the areas are spacious yet stylish. This house will be taken to the outskirts of Milan after the Fair and tested against the elements for durability and longevity.

Living Nature Pavilion

The white and glazed hard edges of this pavilion contrast beautifully with Duomo’s intricate architecture. The experience took us on a journey through the four seasons: the pavilion is imagined as a sustainable oasis and allows the seasons to cohabit right next door to each other.

Power for air conditioning is managed by solar panels, however, the ‘winter room’ felt like a mild Auckland summer’s night while the other three seasons felt more like the peak of Singapore heat.

Hay

The Dutch brand took over the historical Palazzo Clerici building – setting its simple and colourful designs against a backdrop of gilded gold leaf features and crystal chandeliers. The colours have already been seen many time this season, however, the green powder coat and the burgundy timber stains were original and a standout.

Again, Hay shows us how we can complete the whole experience, with a great range of homewares on display. Hay’s workplace solutions were also on display, helping to share its vision for the future of collaboration and innovation. This was an incredible venue full of fantastic product.
