New Zealand Architecture Awards 2018 shortlist announced
The shortlist of 48 finalists has been announced for this year’s New Zealand Architecture Awards. The Awards are run by the New Zealand Institute of Architects and operate on a peer-review system. Finalists include projects from across the country in 11 categories.
Auckland architect and jury convenor Richard Goldie said, “The jury is looking forward to visiting some very good school and university buildings. Education projects couple specific requirements and high expectations. It’s not easy to get them right.”
The jury also includes Wellington architect John Melhuish, Dunedin architect Andrea Bell and Melbourne architect Amy Muir. The judges will visit all the shortlisted projects in person at the end of August before making their final selections.
There is also a strong show of residential projects and public architecture on this year’s list of finalists. Richard Goldie notes that he is pleased that a Housing New Zealand development has been included in the shortlist.
“Social housing is hugely important and also, because of budget constraints, architecturally challenging,” Goldie said. “We have to find ways to up the game with this type of work, and Housing New Zealand obviously is trying hard to lift standards of design and performance.”
