The kitchen cabinetry is clad in black film face plywood and the benchtops are concrete, poured in situ.
The exterior building envelope is made of recycled brick, steel-and-glass warehouse windows and Australian bluestone cobbles.
The design approach utilises a simple, minimal aesthetic, fitting with the development’s philosophy to create a sustainable environment by doing more with less material.
Fisher & Paykel delivered appliance packages for the apartments that aligned with the high standards established for functionality, design and sustainability.
Space-saving appliances were specified across the board, including integrated double DishDrawer™ dishwashers are completely concealed in the black cabinetry to create a crisp, minimal look.

Partner content: Developed by Melbourne’s Breathe Architecture, Nightingale Housing is a medium-density building model with a triple bottom line. It is specifically designed to create affordable housing that is also sustainable and which will build community, not only among residents but the rest of the neighbourhood. Nightingale 1 in Brunswick, Melbourne is the inaugural project under this model and it has proved to be extremely successful.
Concept design
The Nightingale 1 building is home to 20 apartments and an extensive list of sustainable features, including rooftop gardens, a shared solar hot water system, recycled timber floors, double-glazed windows and bicycle parking. “But the biggest move was to take the gas out of the building, make it all electric and then to build our own Nightingale energy system to provide carbon-neutral electricity more cheaply than paying for black electricity,” says project founder and Breathe principal Jeremy McLeod.
Detail design
Each apartment was designed along the same principle as the development as a whole – to create a sustainable environment by doing more with less material – an approach that resulted in a simple, minimal aesthetic. The spaces all have hardwood floors, plenty of natural light and a liberal amount of storage, with kitchens that hug the edge of the open-plan dining and living areas to accommodate large and small gatherings and to maximise internal space.
Working with the team at Breathe Architecture, Fisher & Paykel delivered appliance packages that aligned with the high standards established for functionality, design and sustainability. Space-saving appliances were specified across the board, including a nine-function electric oven matched with a 60cm induction cooktop – a very sustainable way to cook. A flat-door stainless-steel refrigerator maintains the clean lines of the design, while integrated double DishDrawer™ dishwashers are completely concealed in the black cabinetry to create a crisp, minimal look.
