Forty-nine finalists in nine categories have been announced for the 2018 Timber Design Awards. The awards programme is the only of its kind to celebrate innovation in timber from engineers, architects, architectural designers, and builders. NZ Wood’s promotion manager, Debbie Fergie, said, “Both local and international companies look to these awards for timber design inspiration. Our projects are the equal of others worldwide, as this year’s crop of entries proves!”

Winners in all categories will be announced at a gala event at the Grand Millennium Hotel in Auckland on 20 September. A new category was added this year: Multi-storey Timber Buildings. Additionally, there is a Student category in which two finalist students will be chosen later in the year and will make short presentations at the gala dinner.

The jury panel for this year’s awards was made up of Pamela Bell (founder of Prefab NZ), Tim Melville (president of the New Zealand Institute of Architects), David Carradine (structural engineer and president-elect of the New Zealand Timber Design Society) and Andrea Stocchero (sustainable architect with Scion Research). The 122 finalists were of very high calibre, giving the judges a difficult job.
