Open Christchurch calls on public to nominate the city’s best buildings
During Open Christchurch 2019, the public was invited to visit the Ao Tawhiti school.
With a shortlist already drawn up by a council of building professionals, organisers of Open Christchurch are calling on the public to add their input for Christchurch's best spaces.
The event, influenced by the principles of Open House Worldwide, will grant access to a range of buildings which are normally off-limits to the public. Held by Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City-making, Open Christchurch is currently scheduled for the third weekend of May 2021 and is looking for between 30 and 40 buildings to feature in the festival.
“Open Christchurch literally throws the doors open. It will enable people to experience great design from the inside, and discover another aspect of our city,” says Te Pūtahi’s Director Jessica Halliday.
The selection criteria will cover the various ways that a building or site could be considered exceptional, regardless of age. Buildings will be selected on the basis of design excellence, Ōtautahi Christchurch identity and history and how it will affect the Open Christchurch experience. The final list of participating projects will be decided by Te Pūtahi’s building council and subject to the consent of the occupier of the building.
