It is a brisk winter’s morning when I visit this Parnell house, designed by Kerry Avery of Avery Team Architects. But inside the house you wouldn’t immediately know it, with sun streaming in the north-east-facing windows; the house is light and warm.

Avery designed this large house for a family of four. For the ensuite bathroom, his clients wanted something unique and luxurious – a place that could be a retreat from the bustle of family life. They also wanted a powder room for guests, and two family bathrooms – one for each of the children.

Avery worked with Ray Lind, who designed the interiors of the house, to create this glamorous space. Lind describes the look of this area as “light but dramatic”. It has large floor and wall tiles made of crystal marble. Each was made to measure and has a hand-cut customised bevelled edge. Behind the vanity is a panel of pearlised glass mosaic tiles.

The vanity units are made of crystal-glass slabs with twin marble sinks. The cabinetry is a wood-look veneer that is continued around parts of the walls and on the concealed sliding doors to the dressing room and bedroom. The cabinetry in the dressing room and one wall of the bedroom has the same veneer, creating a nice continuity between the three rooms that make up the master suite.

A large walk-in shower has seamless lines with a linear quattro full-tray system, and at the other end of the long room is a large bath in an inset nook with a recessed shelf for toiletries.

The two family bathrooms – each sitting off a bedroom – have a different look. They were designed to be simple and straightforward and have a timeless feel. They have matching solid-onyx stone mosaic tiles and each has a shower, WC and vanity.

Upstairs in the entryway, there is a small powder room. This room is a dark, dramatic space with the Tunisian limestone tiles carried through from the entry, dark Florence Broadhurst wallpaper and a marble vanity unit.

Each of the bathrooms in this house uses the finest materials and finishes combined with precision attention to detailing to create a highly polished, refined look.
