Plans for an edible garden on Auckland’s waterfront
Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter has been earmarked as the site for an extensive edible community garden and educational facility for children.
The proposed site to be developed later this year will further the work of the ‘Garden to Table Trust’ - a charitable organisation that endeavours to teach New Zealand children about food, horticulture and their natural environment through hands-on harvesting, preparation and sharing of food.
The landscape design and initial concepts for the garden and facilities have been developed by Susannah Kitching and Robert Cunning of Opus International and feature more than 100 raised garden beds within a 1500sqm lot.
When established, the new site will enable children from a number of local primary schools including Bayfield School, Ponsonby Primary and Freemans Bay School to actively participate in the cultivation and upkeep of the community garden. As well as being a rich resource for Auckland residents, the new facilities will offer another unique event space on the waterfront.
