Plus Architecture’s New Zealand operations, established in Christchurch in 2015 and Auckland in 2016, have strengthened the practice’s leadership with the promotion of Elke Vermeulen to Senior Associate. Based in Auckland and servicing projects across New Zealand, Vermeulen brings 15 years of architectural experience and proven expertise in managing complex, large-scale developments.

Vermeulen’s holistic design approach to large-scale projects prioritises context-driven, user-centric and commercially grounded solutions, ensuring buildings integrate seamlessly with their surroundings and respond intelligently to occupants. She says, “I am inspired by my architectural heritage and a commitment to continuous learning. I’m inspired by new tools like AI and draw on life experiences like motherhood, which have enhanced my focus and efficiency in delivering thoughtful design.”

“I aim to create beautiful, problem-solving architecture that shapes future skylines and communities, driven by a passion for collaborative design teams,” says Vermeulen.

Her portfolio includes significant developments, such as the Pacifica Penthouses, where Vermeulen served as the Lead Project Architect during the design and construction phases. Vermeulen mentions that the client’s heavy involvement throughout the process was a factor in the overall success of her first high-end residential project.

Elke was also the Lead Project Architect on La Quinta Parnell + Augustus Park, a valuable learning opportunity for Vermeulen, who worked collaboratively with Safari Group. Vermeulen’s portfolio also includes multiple projects for the Ministry of Justice, New Zealand Police, and St Cuthbert’s College, demonstrating her ability to navigate complex project requirements while maintaining strong client relationships.

With particular strength in multi-residential, civic, and hospitality projects, Vermeulen has established herself as a versatile leader. Commenting on the appointment, Plus Architecture director Hamish Davies said: “Elke’s promotion comes at a pivotal time as we continue to expand our trans-Tasman operations. Her deep understanding of the New Zealand market, combined with her proven delivery capability, will be instrumental in driving our continued growth and pursuing new opportunities across our target sectors. We see Elke as fundamental to our continued work in positioning Plus Architecture as a market leader in New Zealand.”
