Unitec students light up Waiwharariki Anzac Square for Matariki
Unitec’s School of Architecture is celebrating Matariki over the next two days by showcasing the work of students from its Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Bachelor of Architectural Studies programmes at Waiwharariki Anzac Square in Takapuna.
Now in its third year, the vibrant, two-day event recognising the Māori New Year in the heart of Takapuna showcases the creativity of the School’s second-year students. As part of their learning, ākonga will present a series of interactive architectural light installations, exploring the themes of recyclability, storytelling and creative reuse.
Friday 20 June
6:30am: Karakia (dawn blessing) to open the event
From morning onwards: Student light installations take shape
Saturday 21 June
10:00am to 3:30pm: Student light works remain on display

Academic Programme Manager and lecturer at Unitec Yusef Patel says the event is a unique opportunity for the public to experience Matariki in action, see creativity in the built environment, and to connect with Unitec’s design community. “Whether you’re interested in design, culture or community, there’s something for everyone,” says Patel. “There’s no RSVP needed – just show up and enjoy. Kai, culture and creativity await you at the square and we’d love to see you there.”
