Vale: Ron Sang

New Zealand architect and prominent figure in modernist architecture, Ron Sang, passed away at home surrounded by his family on 11 June 2021.

Sang was born in Fiji on 11 July 1938 and moved to Auckland in 1957, where he studied architecture at Auckland University College. He is well known for his 1976 design of the Brake House in Auckland’s Titirangi. The house won an NZIA Enduring Award in 2001 and an NZIA Auckland District Branch Design Award in 1985.

Sang also published art books and was an avid art collector. He practiced for more than 50 years and is reported to have designed over 300 homes. He was made an officer of the NZ Order of Merit for services to architecture and art in 2000. His life and work will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by those near and far who have been touched by it.
