HOOP-LA guided Te Whau river walk
This Saturday join HOOP-LA, led by Nina Patel and Kathy Waghorn, on a guided walk along little known routes beside the Te Whau river in Avondale, Auckland. The walk traces the route of the second stage of the Te Whau Pathway, a project championed by a local trust in partnership with Auckland Council, and currently under construction. Once finalised, the 13km Te Whau Pathway will link 33 reserves, esplanade strips, sports parks and roads along the Whau River.
Along the walk, we will come across unusual monuments, fold up paper landscape models, go on secret tracks, eat snacks and fill out our limited edition HOOP-LA Field Books. We will also observe the changes to this part of the city as it starts to become more densely occupied.
Meet at Rizal Reserve at the end of Wingate Street in Avondale at 10am. The walk takes about two hours (with stops) and ends at Riversdale Reserve to join in the art, games, great food and music as part of the Whau Arts Festival. Email hi@hoop-la.nz if you want to know more, or just come along. Come prepared with sturdy shoes and a rain coat as conditions may be muddy.
HOOP-LA collaborate with others to develop public realm initiatives reconnecting Te Whau River with its urban environment, thereby prompting new opportunities for its rejuvenation and use. Nina Patel (BArch, MUrb Des) lives in Avondale and is an urban designer working with Motu Design. Dr Kathy Waghorn (BFA, BArch, PhD) lives in New Lynn and is a senior lecturer in architecture at the University of Auckland.
