Born and raised in Taumarunui, Brown was educated at Auckland University College – School of Architecture 1963-66 and then undertook postgraduate study at the Architectural Association School of Planning & Urban Design, London 1969-71. He initially worked at Structon Group in Wellington with Ian Athfield 1967-68 before four years overseas. He returned to Structon Group for 20 years 1973-93, a director after 1976. He then contracted to Craig Craig Moller, working with Gordon Moller on Sky Tower/Sky City as Project Architect 1994-98. He then became director in Stephenson & Turner NZ’s Wellington office from 1998-2009.
Brown returned to Auckland, practicing as a sole practitioner from 2010 at Rosso Design, now based in Matakana.
He was the co-convenor of the 1989 NZIA Conference; received a President’s Award and is the recipient of multiple design awards, including 2 NZIA National awards, 2 NZIA Enduring awards, a Gold DINZ Interior Design award, a joint CHH Heritage award for Government Buildings, 4 Wool Board Interior awards and 30 NZIA and other awards, as well as having been judge/juror on many award programmes.
