Hugh studied architecture at Auckland University, graduating in 1984. Hugh was recognised as a fellow of the NZIA in 2001. In 2006, Hugh and co-director Ewan Brown set up Tennent Brown Architects, a recognised firm that resides in the heart of Te Whanganui-a-Tara, works across ngā motu and on large public and commercial projects. Hugh is design director for the practice and is well known for his work on projects pertaining to the spirit and kaupapa Māori.
