In this slow walk through the New Zealand landscape, world-renowned photographer Simon Devitt invites us into thirty of New Zealand’s most architecturally stunning homes, from sun-drenched baches in Northland to rammed earth houses in the deep south.

Weaving through dreamy and dramatic locations, including a crescent-moon shaped bach in Tutukaka and a bivvy house inspired by a gold miner’s hut overlooking Lake Wakatipu, Cape to Bluff tells not only the story of New Zealand’s fluctuating microclimate and how we respond to creative challenges, but also speaks to how we live today, and what we value.

Featuring the work of thirty of Aotearoa’s leading architects — some structures never seen in public before — Cape to Bluff is a celebration of the new dawn of New Zealand architecture, once outward-looking and seeking inspiration – now self-assured, sensible, poetic and sustainable.

Alongside Devitt’s inimitable photographs, Andrea Stevens captures the unique story of each project. Some of the country’s top architects respond to creative and distinctively New Zealand questions such as: how do you build a calm oasis in the bustling centre of Tāmaki Makaurau, a beachfront crib in Omaui capable of withstanding sea-level rise, or a sanctuary in Maniatoto that is comfortable in both sub-zero and mid-thirties temperatures?

The brainchild of Simon Devitt, Cape to Bluff is at once an essential collector’s item, an aspirational journey through the most spectacular parts of the country, and a compelling representation of how New Zealanders see themselves and the world, from the inside out.

Award-winning designer Luke Scott has created a minimalist hardcover with a blue fabric and minimalist white deboss that will hold up to the test of time. At 275(w) x 370(h) x 36(d)mm, with 368 pages and weighing in at 3.6kgs, this is a nice hefty book to add to the coffee table collection. With all things considered this book should fly off the shelf.

Pre-sales are now open via Simon Devitt’s website, with the book becoming available online and in all good bookstores from January 2022. Visit www.simondevitt.com for more information.
