The Nelson/Marlborough Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) awards have seen 15 finalists named by a judging panel of local architects and community members.

The jury was led by Nelson architect Andrew Irving, who was joined by fellow Nelson architect Ian Bowman, Hamilton architect Brian White, and Olivia Hall, Head of the Māori Department at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

Irving said, “I would like to congratulate the architects, and clients, of the projects that made the shortlist for the 2020 Nelson / Marlborough Architecture Awards.”

“Among the projects we shortlisted were an airport and a peanut butter factory, a classroom block and a sports centre, some fine houses, an urban park, a bridge and, yes, a public toilet,” he continued.

The NZIA has noted that the COVID-19 lockdown has halted the usual jury visits to shortlisted projects. “Resumption of the visits or the adoption of alternative means of deciding award-winners are dependent on the national measures adopted to combat the COVID-19 pandemic,” the organisation says.

The NZIA Architecture Awards programme is supported by Resene.
