On Friday the 28th of October, eight exceptional projects received a national award at the 2022 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards at a gala awards ceremony held at Te Pae in Christchurch.

CEO of Architectural Designers New Zealand, Keryn Davis, said the projects entered into the awards programme this year demonstrated the diverse skillsets and experience of ADNZ members.

“This year’s entries demonstrate the depth of talent within our membership body of Architectural Designers New Zealand. The projects represent the diverse skill and experience required of our members and the complex work they are contracted to undertake. From a bach in the West Coast to a brewery fit-out, a luxury home, a Church and an apartment complex, our members are doing it all. ADNZ members are designing spaces that accommodate the way Kiwis are living and the diverse landscapes they are residing within.”

This year’s panel of four judges consisted of Bernadette Muir, Fiona Short, John Chaplin and Rebecca Long (the Resene Colour in Design Award judge).

SUPREME AWARD WINNER

Biv_Punakaiki by Mitchell Coll, Fabric (formerly Coll Architecture)

Supreme Award winner: Biv_Punakaiki by Mitchell Coll, Fabric (formerly Coll Architecture). Image:  Stephen Goodenough

Location of property: Punakaiki, West Coast
Awards:

  • Supreme Award Winner
  • National Winner for Residential Compact New Home up to 150m2

Description: Designed as a collaboration between Mitchell Coll and the client, who is a Hong Kong-based architect, this building was to be rented as high-end, short-term accommodation; and the first of a series of buildings. Set in the West Coast bush, the aesthetic concept was a reinterpretation of a historic gold miner’s hut but with all the modern facilities to warmly welcome modern-day travelers and encourage them to have a uniquely West Coast and New Zealand experience.

COMMERCIAL INTERIOR WINNER

Three Boys Brewery by Pippin Wright-Stow, F3 Design

Location of property: Christchurch, Canterbury

Award:

  • National Winner for Commercial Interior

Description: Three Boys is a brewery with a history long before craft beer was the ‘in thing’ in Aotearoa. The fit-out of the brewery is, first and foremost, functional. Mix that with the old warehouse it is situated in and you start to get that old school factory feel that drives the creative look and feel of the place. This is not a situation where the fit-out is ever complete but an ever-responsive adaptation to the space.

RESIDENTIAL NEW HOME BETWEEN 150m2 and 300m2 WINNER

Glenstrae by Gareth Ritchie, Archco Architecture

Residential New Home Between 150sqm and 300sqm winner: Glenstrae by Gareth Ritchie, Archco Architecture. Image:  Stephen Goodenough

Location of property: Christchurch, Canterbury

Award:

  • National Winner for Residential New Home Between 150m2 and 300m2

Description: Situated in the beach suburb of Redcliffs, the sloped site offers stunning views of McCormack’s Bay all the way to South New Brighton. The geotechnically challenging site provided some uncommon conditions which lead to a two-part split-level structure with an engineered control joint separation. It was desired that the striking views were to be embraced, whilst still retaining a private and cosy setting that was sympathetic to the character and landscape of the established area.

RESIDENTIAL MULTI-UNIT DWELLING WINNER

Riverbank Quarter by Marcus Stufkens, Stufkens+Chambers Architects

Location of property: Christchurch, Canterbury

Award:

  • National Winner for Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling

Description: This central CBD apartment complex is a result of the client’s brief to create a mixed-use development that is desirable to live in and reintroduces a social ecology back into the city. The design is a two-three storey complex of 14 mid- to high-market quality residential units and four street-facing commercial tenancies.

RESIDENTIAL ALTERATIONS AND ADDITIONS WINNER

Orakei Townhouses by Mark Callander, Creative Arch

Location of property: Orakei, Auckland

Award:

  • National Winner for Residential Alterations and Additions

Description: This project was an opportunity to revive two homes that were suffering from extreme damage due to poor design and material choices. A complete redesign from the slab up resolved water-tightness issues in a way that not only significantly improved aesthetics and functionality but increased the value and liveability of the homes. The homes were demolished to the slab and rebuilt with an efficient, sustainable envelope and long-lasting materials. Now, the site houses two contemporary, modern homes that maximise their position in one of Auckland’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, drawing in natural light at every opportunity and embracing the incredible views of the sea.

RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS WINNER

Palm Springs by Jon McAlpine, TGA Ltd

Location of property: Papamoa, Tauranga

Awards:

  • National Winner for Residential Interiors
  • National Winner for Resene Colour in Design

Description: A unique show home that sits comfortably within the Palm Springs aesthetic. It is practical, liveable and environmentally conscious. The design has been approached with a midcentury modern philosophy. The home boasts a range of eco features and has been designed to gain accreditation as 6 Star Homestar-rated. The design is optimised for solar electricity generation and storage, energy efficiency, and to suit local climate and site conditions.

COMMERCIAL INDUSTRIAL WINNER

St. John’s Church by Werner Naudé, DCA Architects of Transformation

Location of property: Rotorua, Bay of Plenty

Award:

  • National Winner for Commercial Industrial

Description: In 2017, fire destroyed Rotorua’s St John’s Church. The challenge was to design a church for the future, in the face of declining Christianity in New Zealand. Located on a busy intersection, the new church has been rebuilt over the footprint of the previous structure. DCA’s design response was to re-think what a church building could be and how it could enable non-Christians to feel comfortable in approaching it. The building is visually open and engaging-with flexibility to serve the church’s community ministries and community hub. The building scale is humble, lowered at the main areas of public engagement to a residential scale.

RESIDENTIAL NEW HOME OVER 300m2

Driftwood by Ben Gilpin, Gil-plans Architecture

Residential New Home over 300sqm winner: Driftwood by Ben Gilpin, Gil-plans Architecture. Image:  Paul McCredie

Location of property: Kāpiti Coast, Wellington

Award:

  • National Winner for Residential New Home over 300m2

Description: A new beachfront house was required with separate spaces for visiting extended family. Feature-screens obscure and provide a sense of intrigue to the approach of the home. Upon entering, you are drawn into the home down the main gallery to the views and dynamic coastal setting. The long, low-level gable forms, reduce the scale of the house and nestle it within the setting. Large facings, matching the columns, are introduced across the house to create a cohesive and balanced form.
