Entries are now open for the 2023 Brick Bay Folly. Created as an opportunity for architecture students and recent graduates to investigate the intersection between sculpture and architecture, entrants are tasked with “designing temporary structures that serve no practical purpose other than as a dynamic physical experience and design experiment”.

The winning project will be selected from a shortlist of finalists and the design team given the opportunity to manage the build and see their work come to life at Brick Bay , Snells Beach. Following the unveiling of the folly in May 2023, visitors will be able to view the winning project as part of Brick Bay’s ever-evolving sculpture trail. Finished projects remain on display for a minimum of six months and a maximum of two years.

The successful team will receive a grant and sponsorship to the overall value of $25,000 towards realising the project. Mentoring and technical support will also be provided through Cheshire Architects,  ReseneStructure Design and Unitec.

For the winners, this is also an opportunity to see your work in print. Leading architectural photographer Sam Hartnett will capture the finished project, and articles on the winners and their design will be featured in Architecture NZ magazine and online at ArchitectureNow.

Each year, a jury is formed from a selection of architects, engineers, academics and experts, as well as previous folly winners. The judging panel chair for 2020, Pip Cheshire, said of last year’s winner, Genealogy of the Pacific: “The Folly programme offers the promise of the realisation of a project to its young designers but it’s not a free ride. They are charged with doing all that is necessary to detail, manufacture and erect the project within a tightly defined budget. If the result is a tautly unified whole, its development and construction offered all the challenges of traversing the digital-to-artefact divide and did so while navigating the many challenges Covid threw up.”

For the purposes of the Folly, graduates must have graduated in the last 10 years as of February 1, 2022. Students enrolled in an accredited architectural programme at any level in a New Zealand tertiary institution, including international students, are also eligible to apply. Entries must be in by Monday 13 June, 2022. Finalists will be notified in late June, with projects completed by the beginning of March, 2023.
