Launched in 2013, the Lexus Design Award aims to nurture and support the next generation of creators. Submissions are open until 10 October 2021, and entrants will be judged on how their creative ideas anticipate, innovate and captivate.

Designers from across disciplines are welcome to enter their projects. Last year’s finalists included sustainable packaging, 3D-knitted electronic textiles, and a portable solar water distiller from Kiwi/Austrian Henry Glogau, who went on to win the competition.

Based on the three principles of the Lexus brand, the awards require entrants to demonstrate how their designs anticipate future challenges and innovate to solve them, while still functioning in a manner that captivates public attention. Once six finalists are selected through this process, they will then be eligible to access a budget of nearly $40,000 NZD to design a prototype and present their project to the judges for the final round of the Lexus Design Award 2022. One overall winner will then be given the Grand Prix title.

Along with the financial support, organisers will also bring in four leading creators to provide mentoring through one-on-one dialogues, in order to help bring their ideas to life. Returning as mentors this year are Simon James and Scott Bridgens of Resident.

Entries for the Lexus Design Award 2022 are currently open, with applications closing on 10 October 2021. More information about the judging committee members and mentors will be announced later in the year.
