Rinnai engineers in Japan have been busy developing technology that’s truly ahead of its time.

Taking another big step on the journey toward a more renewable future, they’ve created the world’s first fully engineered Hydrogen Hot Water Heater that produces 0% carbon emissions.

Not surprisingly, it didn’t happen overnight. After spending years developing gas appliances, like INFINITY water heaters, they learned how to get the best out of combustion and fluid control technologies — and were able to put that knowledge to good use.

Managing Director of Rinnai New Zealand, Ray Ferner, says the hydrogen concept model is a game-changer:

“While there is further work to be done, this is a critical step towards a zero net carbon future and the start of bringing to market proven household gas appliances that can run on totally renewable gas.”

It also means Rinnai’s ready to offer continuous hot water systems for homes and businesses as soon as the hydrogen market and regulations are established. New Zealand doesn’t currently have the infrastructure to supply 100% hydrogen through the existing pipe network, so the product won’t be able to launch until after the infrastructure is in place.

Still, the timing couldn’t be better. The Government is already starting to define a gas transition pathway and with more renewable gas trials expected to kick off both here and overseas, there are promising signs ahead.

Even though we won’t see 100% hydrogen water heaters inside our homes just yet, the potential of this new technology — and what it means for the future of the industry — can’t be underestimated. When the infrastructure is ready, Rinnai will be ready too.
