FFWD016: Nicholas Stevens & Gary Lawson

The University of Auckland School of Architecture and Planning’s annual guest lecture series, Fast Forward, aims to foster debate, discussion and development within the disciplines of architecture, urban planning and urban design. There will be ten events taking place from July to October 2016.

Wednesday 5 October:
Nicholas Stevens & Gary Lawson of Stevens Lawson Architects, Auckland
The Blyth Performing Arts Centre, Iona College, Hawke’s Bay

Engineering Lecture Theatre 439, 20 Symonds Street, 6.30pm.

Stevens Lawson Architects is a design intensive practice with a deep commitment to producing innovative buildings that engage with culture and landscape. They combine extensive research and consultation with conceptual thinking, artistic and technical skill to create a fresh architecture relevant to the world we live in. They have a passionate interest in environmental quality and a strong belief in the power of architecture to enhance people’s lives, and aim to produce architecture of humanism and spirit, culture and community.

The Blyth Performing Arts Centre is a 400 seat concert chamber completed in early 2015. Its sculptural form, innovative interior spaces and outstanding acoustics create an exciting new place for music performance for Iona College. The facility was the recipient of the NZIA New Zealand Architecture Medal for 2015. This lecture will uncover the creative process behind the building including the conceptual approach, design development, and construction, and also cover other recent projects Stevens Lawson is working on.

All lectures start at 6.30pm, are free and open to the public.
