A modern marae imbued in te ao Māori, a contemporary multi-housing project, bespoke cabin interior and much more — nine projects and one up-and-coming designer were honoured at this year's Interior Awards, held on 14 July 2022 at St Matthew-in-the-City in Auckland.

This year, with 31 finalists all of an extremely high calibre, it was always going to be difficult choosing just one winner in each category,” says jury convenor and interior editor for Architecture NZ Amanda Harkness. “The projects which shone were those brought to life through multidisciplinary design, bringing together and layering art, culture, light and materiality, and a very careful consideration of those who use the space. Many were the result of great collaborative effort and the intense involvement and commitment of the designers and collaborators was evident throughout, in both the detailing and how the spaces felt.”

Harkness was joined on the jury this year by Naomi Rushmer, design director of Studio Naomi Rushmer; DJ Tai, principal at Cheshire Architects; Amelia Holmes, director of Amelia Holmes Interiors; and director of TOA Architects, Nicholas Dalton.

“We also saw a number of smaller-size but very considered and well-executed projects coming through this year,” Harkness adds. “The small Eden View kitchen project and the Ārepa studio contain a handful of playful moves, as well as interesting social aspects, and the collective effort behind Te Rau Karamu Marae resulted in an incredibly focused cultural masterpiece.”

We offer a huge congratulations to all of our 2022 finalists and winners. Read on to see this year’s best New Zealand interiors.
